Call comes as claims continue of human rights violations by Russia.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield announced on Monday, after meeting with Romania’s prime minister, that the U.S. will be calling for Russia’s removal from the United Nations Human Rights Council. “It hurts the credibility of the Council and the UN writ large. And it is simply wrong. Which is why we believe it is time for the UN General Assembly to suspend them,” the ambassador said.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated that the U.S. will make that push along with Ukraine and other European countries in the UN. To officially suspend Russia from the council, a two-thirds majority vote is required, so securing coordinated approval from most of the U.N.’s 193 members will be a large task to achieve that goal.
